But after living in Bali for some time, I have learned something important about travelling around the island: Bali can look quite small on a map, but getting from one place to another can sometimes take much longer than you expect.
The traffic can be busy, especially around popular areas such as Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud and the airport. Some roads are narrow, and travelling around the island can be tiring if you are constantly worrying about directions, parking or how you are going to get to your next destination.
And honestly, once we are in our 50s, 60s or beyond, I think there is nothing wrong with choosing comfort.
We still want to explore. We just don’t necessarily want to spend our holiday exhausted.

There are many ways to get around Bali. You can rent a scooter, use online taxis or join an organised group tour.

1. You Can Travel at Your Own Pace
This is probably my favourite reason to hire a private car.
When you join a group tour, you normally have to follow someone else’s schedule. You may have to leave the hotel at a certain time, spend an hour at an attraction and then get back into the bus because the group has another stop to visit.
That can become tiring.
With a private car and driver, your day is yours.
Perhaps you want to spend a little longer having lunch in Ubud. Maybe you find a lovely café in Sanur and decide you would rather sit there and enjoy the afternoon than rush to the next attraction.
You can.
And if you have been sightseeing all morning and decide you have had enough, you can simply go back to your hotel.
I think this is one of the biggest advantages of travelling privately in Bali. You don’t have to fit your holiday around someone else’s timetable.
2. You Don’t Have to Deal With Bali Traffic
I live in Bali, and even I sometimes find the traffic tiring.
If you are unfamiliar with the roads, driving here can require a lot of concentration. There are busy intersections, scooters, narrow roads and plenty of unexpected situations.
You may also spend time looking for parking or trying to work out whether the road on your map is actually the road you should be taking.
When you have a local driver, you can simply sit back.
Your driver deals with the traffic while you enjoy the scenery, talk with your travel companion or have a little rest between destinations.
For a holiday, I much prefer that.
3. A Local Driver Can Be Very Helpful

Because they live and work in Bali, they usually know the local area well. They may know an alternative route when traffic is particularly heavy or suggest a restaurant that suits what you are looking for.
Sometimes you may also want to change your plans during the day.
Perhaps the weather is not good for visiting a particular attraction, or you have discovered somewhere interesting and want to spend more time there.
Having a driver who is familiar with Bali makes these little changes much easier.
And sometimes it is the simplest things that we appreciate most.
Having someone help with luggage, shopping bags or getting in and out of the car can make a long day of sightseeing feel much easier.
Is Bali Easy to Travel Around After 50?
Absolutely.
I don’t believe you need to be young or extremely active to enjoy Bali. You simply need to plan your days realistically.
One thing I often tell visitors is not to try to see everything in one trip.
Bali has many different areas, and travelling between them can take time. Instead of planning five or six attractions in one day, choose two or three places that you genuinely want to see and leave some breathing room between them.
For example, you might spend a relaxed morning visiting a temple, have lunch somewhere nice and then return to your hotel for a rest.
You don’t have to prove anything.
You are on holiday.
